Scouting Report 7/13/18

Overall this crop is starting to turn the corner and look considerably better at this time. It is a shame that we can’t have 150,000 acres that look like this. This crop may be uneven and mixed in maturity, but all in all it’s not too bad. The rains that we have had over the past week to 10 days along with the cooler temperatures have helped tremendously. It’s amazing what a rain will do.

It’s crazy how some of this crop is still at cotyledon stage while other fields are 15-17 true leafs and blooming for the 2nd  to 3rd week and setting a really good crop. We have every stage of cotton in between. Square sets are holding up really good at this time and overall actually increased considerably this week. Most fields ran anywhere from 89.7% to 97.9% with most right around 94%. This is very good and without a lot of rain we will end up shedding quite a few squares and bolls before it is all said and done. But at this time things look good. Beneficial numbers continue to climb. Aphids are still present in low numbers and should be kept in consideration when making any chemical applications as we don’t want to kill off our beneficials and flair aphids. Spider mites are still present in corn and sorghum but I have not seen them in cotton at this time. The rains should have helped this situation, but again, conserve your benny’s.

Stinkbugs are being found in low numbers in the Garden City area, primarily east of town. At this time only a couple of fields have had numbers high enough to warrant spraying, but at the same time, only a couple of fields have fields with cotton old enough to be concerned. We will need to keep our eyes pealed for stinkbugs this year.
