Sugarcane Aphids Make 2016 Return to St. Lawrence

We knew it was just a matter of time before sugarcane aphids finally showed up somewhere in St. Lawrence and today is the day. From the looks of the field they have be there for better than a week. Many of our fields will be able to outrun SCA to harvest but some of the later planted fields (mid-May or so) may need to be treated. Sivanto Prime at 4 oz. and Transform WG at 1 oz. are still the products of choice. Both have a 14 day PHI. If you get down to the last 7-10 days before harvest and they start showing up, malathion is a viable option. Quite a few fields have greenbugs in them so if you need me to come check a field and identify the aphid species please do. Greenbugs are much cheaper to control than SCA and don’t need to be sprayed as often. Also be sure to check your haygrazer, it can get so sticky that you can’t cut it.
