Armyworms Are Showing Back Up in Wheat

Several armyworm species, primarily fall armyworm, but also beet armyworm and yellowstripped armyworm are showing up in area wheat, triticale and even some alfalfa fields around Garden City and St. Lawrence. If you have any early wheat in the ground at this time it is highly advised to take a look at it and check for worms and their damage. Most of these worms are very small at this point, less the 1/4″ in fact. It will take you getting down on your hands and knees and looking closely for the damage and the larva to find them. If you have very many at all, and your wheat is small, I suggest you go ahead and make an application. Especially if you are trying to strip cotton and it might be a week or more before you get back out there to check your wheat again. In a weeks time you can loose significant portions of a field. I would suggest using a pyrethroid such as Asana, Warrior, Karate, or one of their generics. These will give you the best control, especially on the larger worms. If you need me to take a look at a field for you feel free to give me a call.
