Our 2021 scouts Logan Seidenberger and Brock Braden have officially hit the field this season. Brock checked fields on the west side of the area Monday and Tuesday before heading to College Station for State 4-H Roundup. Both scouts will be in the field next week. Overall things were fairly quite, we did have a couple of spots were thrips were high and are a bit of a concern, but all in all still ok. Everything is basically at cotyledon to 1st true-leaf and trying to get it’s feet under it right now. As always, beneficials are low but will slowly build as long as we don’t do anything to knock their populations down. Soil moisture is still decent but the hot weather this week is drying the top inch or so out. This will force those roots down and help to establish and strong root system as long as we can get a good rain here in the next couple of weeks to relive this crop. Wireworms are doing a little damage in areas, severe in spots, but mostly just sporadic. In severe infestations replanting is required or an alternative crop may be required at this point. In minor feeding, keep notes on locations and consider a seed treatment next season. Especially if darkling beetles are found, it is in no-till or if the field is coming out of grain. And of course, stay on top of those weeds, you don’t need reminding of this but I have to mention it anyway.
