Scouting Report 7/31/20

This will be the last Scouting Report of the season as both of our scouts are finishing up the summer with us and heading back to school and to two-a-days. We appreciate all of the hard work Shay and Logan have done this year. Thank you for being a part of the program we wish them good luck on everything they will accomplish this year. I will post additional updates if anything changes between now and harvest. I have seen some fields with a lighter load of squares… Read More →

Scouting Report 7/24/20

Cooler temperatures and spotty showers have made a portion of this crop look a little better this week than it did last week. It at least looks better in the morning whether it received any rain or not. Fleahoppers are hanging around in moderate numbers in a few locations and appear to be moving in and out of fields especially along borders and along pastures. Keep an eye on square sets in cotton that has not yet started to bloom or is just now beginning to bloom. If… Read More →

Scouting Report 7/17/20

This crop is continuing to make a little more progress each week as more and more fields begin to bloom. Those fields which have good water are sitting around 6-7 NAWF which is not great but not too bad considering this year. Unfortunately quite a few fields are starting to bloom at 3-5 NAWF. These plants are already at cutout and their potential will be very limited. A couple of pests have been on the rise this past week with both stinkbugs and spider mites causing damage. A… Read More →

Scouting Report 7/10/20

Despite the dry weather this crop is starting to make a little progress. A few fields are beginning to bloom and most everything is putting on more squares than it will be able to maintain throughout the season. Fields that are blooming or have just begun to bloom are in good shape with most at or right around 8 NAWF. This will give them plenty of time to set bolls. The down side is that they are trying to set bolls in the terrible heat which may affect… Read More →

Scouting Report 7/2/20

Not a whole lot has changed this week compared to last week, we do have quite a few more fields now squaring and our first fields are starting to put just a handful of blooms on at this time but I would not consider them to be actually blooming at this point. By next week they should reach this point. Cotton fleahoppers are still low in most every field that I have looked at and none of them are up to economic threshold. All but a handful of… Read More →

Scouting Report 6/26/20

Things are still fairly quite this week on the insect front, a few fleahoppers are showing up in a handful of fields that have begun to square. With more fields beginning to square each week now is the time to begin keeping a closer eye on these guys. Fortunately their numbers have been very low and mostly concentrated along pastures. They are moving out of these pastures as these weeds continue to dry down and they look for something a little greener to feed on. A handful of… Read More →

Scouting Report 6/19/20

Not a lot has changed over the past week with everyone still needing a good rain. Even folks with good water need rain due to higher plant populations and higher yield potential. Overall we are seeing very little insect pressure around the area at this time. A lite level of thrips can still be found throughout the entire area but in general they are not an issue for most folks. Most all of the earlier planted cotton, anything with 4-5 true-leaves or more is out of the woods… Read More →

Scouting Report 6/12/20

It’s once again time to kick off another season of cotton as our scouts are back in the field checking plants and taking notes. Aside from the dry conditions that have prevented a large portion of our acres from emerging most fields are on the quiet side as they generally are this time of the year. Most cotton is in the area of cotyledon to 4 true-leaves with a few fields around 5-6 true-leaves and even fewer which are beginning to square at this time. Insect wise, thrips… Read More →

Wheat Update

WHEAT UPDATE Here’s a quick update on the current situation of the wheat crop in the St. Lawrence area. I have checked several fields this week and we are starting to pick up stripe rust in quite a few fields in the area. This is not overly surprising considering the cool, wet conditions that we experienced just a few weeks back. However, I check with several agronomist from here all the way to Corpus just last week and the only reported cases were in Runnels County. At this… Read More →

Spider Mites Increasing in Cotton

Spider Mites have been increasing over the past week in area cotton fields. They have not only been on the rise in dry land fields in dry dusty locations, but also in several irrigated fields and found throughout these fields. In many of these fields the upper surface of the leaves are turning red from the feeding damage. Beneficial insects have done a fairly good job of cleaning up mite populations in some areas, but not completely. I have also seen instances where the mites are feeding inside… Read More →
